Burks Elementary School

There are many opportunities to volunteer at Burks Elementary School. We have projects such as workdays, supply drives, and snacks for faculty meetings. We also have weekly commitments such as mentors, book clubs, and tutors..

MENTORS:
  • Mentors serve as adult role models, encouragers, and friends.
  • Commitment to come see your mentee on a regular basis, i.e., once a week for about 45 minutes.
  • Have lunch with your mentee in the school cafeteria as a special treat from time to time.
  • Both English and Spanish-speaking role models are needed
  • Male mentors are high priority
TUTORING:
  • Kindergarten & 1st grade
  • Tutors work with students to help them master a specific skill that will help the student be successful in the classroom.
  • Teachers provide the tutors with specific instructions on how to help the child and the necessary materials for tutoring the child.
  • Commit to come to see the students on a regular basis, i.e. once a week for about 30 minutes.
BOOK CLUBS:
  • Read aloud or read along groups to share classic and fun books with kids. Group size is 4 to 6 children. Presenting fun books in this way encourages kids to love reading.
  • Each session meets twice per week for about 30 minutes and meets for 9 weeks (or as long as it takes to complete the book). You can work one session or volunteer for multiple sessions.
SNACKS:
  • A group interested in providing snacks for Wednesday afternoon (3:30 pm) faculty meetings once each month
  • Provide snacks on a “surprise” occasional basis for the Faculty Break Room. Snacks would be light fare such as chips/salsa, cookies or brownies, and a beverage.
  • Does not require registering with McKinney ISD
VOLUNTEER APPLICATION:

Each volunteer who works with the children is required to fill out a “Volunteer Application” and have a criminal check (automatic with the Volunteer Application). This must be done immediately and renewed each year before volunteering at the school. Mentors are required to attend a specific training.
