Jan 8 - Jesus' Baptism and Our Identity

Jan 8 - Jesus' Baptism and Our Identity
Traditionally, at the beginning of Epiphany we read about Jesus’ own baptism, but rarely do we ask the question why it was that the sinless Son of God insisted that he be baptized at all? Certainly he was following Jewish custom, but much more importantly, after the account of his baptism we hear God the Father announcing that Jesus is indeed his beloved Son with whom he is well pleased. And that's the point. With that divine announcement Jesus' identity and his mission are connected to ours. Because we too are God’s beloved children with whom he is well pleased. THAT is our identity as Christ-followers. First and foremost, we are of God. We are his possession because we belong to him and our service and mission in the world in his name pleases him! Let us begin the this New Year with our own identities firmly rooted in nothing else but Jesus Christ. Audio: Jan 8 - Jesus' Baptism and Our Identity Readings (Epiphany I)
