Above all else, loving our enemies means recognizing the human dignity that is in them, put there by God. When we don’t acknowledge that dignity, something goes horribly wrong. We suddenly have license to devalue, mock, and humiliate our enemies who are nonetheless deeply loved by God. In our world right now, we are encouraged to label people as friend or foe. We are also encouraged to take down our foes. But the only label we should place on someone is “Loved by God, DEEPLY loved by God.” Rather than taking down our foes, we should engage in thoughtful discourse with them. Our goal in discourse cannot be to win the argument—that is never the goal of love. Our aim is simple—to understand.
